What Kind of Student Help
is Available? There are various categories of student help
available to the community. The
first is experiential education students such as service-learning, practicum,
and internships. The second is work-study. UMass Lowell provides a limited amount of
paid work-study students to local
non-profit community service organizations. The third is unpaid student volunteers. The Community Connections Clearinghouse
can assist you determine what type of help is available and in making the
necessary connections.
What is Service-Learning? “Service-learning is an educational experience that integrates community service
with classroom instruction, an opportunity for students to meet identified needs
in community settings where the need for assistance is great and ongoing. It is
focused on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility--the service
and the learning are designed to be valuable both for the student and the
community.”

What is a Practicum? Practicum is field-based venue in which the student has
formally proposed that they will work and study to the
equivalence of an in-class course. The experiential
setting will provide substantial learning opportunities
for the student to braid theory and practice together.

What is an Internship? Internship
is an experience in a work setting that is driven by
intentional learning goals and accompanied by sustained
reflection. Internships correspond closely with the
profession or area of work that the student is majoring
in and/or anticipating as their career.

What is Work-Study?
The Federal Work-Study Program provides jobs for
undergraduate and graduate students with financial need,
allowing them to earn money to help pay education
expenses. The program encourages community service work
and work related to each student’s course of study.

What is a Senior Capstone Course?
Senior capstone course is meant for the seniors in the
respective programs in order for them to apply the
principles and skills acquired in coursework,
internships, service work and elsewhere into an
integration of research and practical application of
their leadership training and experience.
